Sam Hughes Cares for Seniors
Written by Carolyn Classen

Sam Hughes Cares for Seniors is a program serving elderly residents in the Sam Hughes neighborhood, under the auspices of the Neighbors Care Alliance (NCA) of Pima Council On Aging. Interim Program Coordinator Carolyn Classen (also Secretary of SHNA) started the program over 3 years ago, co-writing (with one of the Outreach Coordinators at PCOA) an $8500 grant from United Way.  The grant paid for a coordinator who did a community survey/needs assessment in 2005 and created the structure for the program. The grant expired after a year, before services could be provided to senior neighbors.
Months later Carolyn re-organized the program into a volunteer run project which now has about 30 volunteers in the neighborhood. They provide transport to doctors/dentists and carry out
other tasks such as grocery shopping, housekeeping, yard work to 22 elderly clients.  On November 27, 2007, the program held its first Volunteer Appreciation event at the Ward 6 office, and celebrated their One Year Provision of Services solely by volunteers.  Mileage reimbursement is available to those volunteers who file a monthly report, at 50.5 cents a mile, from the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA).
Funding for the program is coming from the Sam Hughes Neighborhood Association and donations. If you know of anyone in the Sam Hughes neighborhood (Speedway to Broadway, Campbell to Country Club) who needs assistance or would like to volunteer, please call the program cell phone at 561-0113. No income verification is needed for the clients/recipients, only that the Senior be over 60 years old and living in Sam Hughes. More information at SHNA website .
